Launch Biology 2016

Last week, we wrapped up teaching Launch Biology Summer Camp for 2016. This year we had 20 9th and 10th grade students participate in the camp; 7 male and 13 female students. They were a bright and intelligent group, with a true enthusiasm to learn about biology and biotechnology. We were able to complete several experiments, lectures, and computer simulations, as well as hold a debate and two competitive games throughout the week. This year’s topics included:

• Bacterial Transformation
• Biodiversity
• Heredity and Mutations
• Model Systems
• Bioethics
• Drug Development
• GMOs
• Ecotoxicology
• The Gut Microbiome
• Fermentation

The class’s favorite activity changes from year to year, and this year everyone LOVED the bioethical debates we held. These debates allowed the students to think critically about current biological issues and questions that are applicable to their lives. Everyone had strong opinions, and it was great to hear the original thoughts and arguments from each and every student. We only wish we had more time with the students to expand our teaching!
